Beware pocket pickers

Watch out for that pickpocket. But don't get paranoid.

Criminals, small timers and dangerous ones, only make up for 1 per cent of the population, so don't let them spoil the fun for you.

Thefts and cheating tend to occur in the same places; be more careful in places that have a bad reputation, better still, avoid them.

You are more likely to lose things in larger cities, particularly in crowded areas like train and bus stations.

Be suspicious of over-friendly fellow passengers, but don't go through the whole journey looking over your shoulder.

Make sure your pockets can be zipped up or have secure buttons; a hidden pocket on the inside of your jacket will be a safer place for your wallet.

If it's too late at night, take a taxi; you may have to pay more but will be safer.

Photocopy all your credit cards and airline tickets and documents, and carry the Xeroxes in your suitcase.

Learn the essential few words Help, Police, Thief in the local language. And hope you won't need to use them.
